SUMMARY:Children's Book Week
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Children’s Book Week\, May 4-10! \nChildren’s Book Week is a national week-long event that celebrates books for young readers. 2026 is the 107th anniversary of this beloved program\, and this year’s event slogan is Books: Get Curious. This slogan celebrates all the ways that the stories we read\, share\, and tell encourage and quench the curiosity inherent in every child. Come into Stillwater County Library for activities all week long. You can also celebrate using all the amazing free resources at EveryChildaReader.net. Follow #BooksGetCurious online for more. \nThe official 2026 Children’s Book Week poster was created by Grace Lin\, a visual and narrative storyteller of the highest caliber. Lauded by readers\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, and the wider children’s book community\, Lin’s work is magical and connective. \nGRACE’S INSIGHT INTO THIS YEAR’S POSTER \nGrace Lin said\, “I’m so thrilled and honored to be the illustrator of this year’s Children’s Book Week poster. I remember in art school looking at some of the old posters by Trina Schart Hyman\, Richard Scarry\, Ezra Jack Keats . . . it’s humbling to think that I get to continue that tradition.” \n“This year’s theme is Books: Get Curious. The good people at Every Child a Reader sent a couple of options\, but ‘Get Curious’ immediately resonated\,” said Lin. “I feel that kids need curiosity—interest in life\, people\, the world\, and beyond—in order to flourish. But we are living in a time where there is a segment of the population that is trying to curtail that curiosity with book banning and unnecessary restrictions. Right now\, curiosity\, with all its joy and wonder\, needs protection.” \n“That’s why I decided to feature a Chinese stone lion in the poster. In Chinese culture\, the lion is a protector\, and the lion with cub (as shown here)\, in particular\, is the guardian of a thriving future. The composition of the poster—the framing with the stacks of books on either side—is also a motif of protection\, emulating the way many Asian people hang banners around doors at Lunar New Year. Those banners are placed around the entryways to ward off any bad luck as well as welcome in the good. In this image\, the books not only make the entryway to curiosity but\, like the lion\, protect it.” \n

SUMMARY:Summer Reading Storytime: Virtual Dinosaur Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Virtual Dinosaur Class with Museum of the Rockies Wednesday\, June 10th at 10:10 am. \nJoin us at the library for a virtual class. How much of Jurassic Park is grounded in real science\, and how much is pure Hollywood magic? Can we actually recreate dinosaurs from ancient amber? Do the famous words “life finds a way” hold up under scientific scrutiny? Join a paleontologist for a fascinating journey through the science and storytelling of the Jurassic Park franchise. Discover which dinosaurs were real\, which ones were made for the movies\, and how paleontologists actually uncover the history of life on Earth. We will dig into the process of paleontology\, explore the paleobiology of the movie’s most iconic prehistoric creatures\, and separate cinematic fiction from ancient fact. Bring your curiosity and your questions! \nAfterwards\, explore real and cast dinosaur bones with us! \nEvery Wednesday during our usual Storytime hour\, Unearth a Story with t-rexellent presenters\, hands on activities and rawr-some books! Aimed for ages 4-12 (but all ages are welcome to attend.) \nMuseum of the Rockies (MOR) hosts a mix of primary and traveling exhibitions\, including one of the most extensive and significant collections of dinosaur fossils in North America. The massive skeleton of ‘Montana’s T. rex’ and other prehistoric animals stand as a testament to the giants that once ruled these lands 66 to over 150 million years ago.

SUMMARY:Summer Reading Storytime: The Montana Story Project for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Montana Story Project for Kids from Humanities Montana on June 17th at 10:30 am. \nNo matter how old you are\, people love a good story. Indeed\, some of our best storytellers are children. A nine or ten-year-old\, before learning self-consciousness\, can offer up the purest form of a narrative. \nAllen will use his book Montana for Kids: The Story of Our State as a foundation for a high-altitude history of Montana\, First Peoples to Lewis and Clark to gold-rush towns and cattle drives. He will then make the point that we’re all of us part of Montana’s story. Who we are and what we’re doing matter. \nAllen will invite the kids to think about contributing their own tales to the ongoing story of our state. Guided by their classrooms\, the children can interview parents and grandparents\, aunts and uncles and caregivers\, asking a set of provided questions. Where did their people come from? What did they hope for? What did they worry about? What obstacles did they overcome along the way? At the end of his presentation\, Allen will offer prompts and guidelines to help the kids get started on their own storytelling journeys. \nEvery Wednesday during our usual Storytime hour\, Unearth a Story with t-rexellent presenters\, hands on activities and rawr-some books! Aimed for ages 4-12 (but all ages are welcome to attend.) \n \nWidely published across genres and forms\, Allen Morris Jones is the author of three novels\, three children’s books\, a highly regarded look at the ethics of hunting\, an award-winning collection of poetry\, and more than 100 published personal essays\, profiles\, short stories\, and other incidental pieces. His first novel\, Last Year’s River\, was selected by Barnes and Noble for its Discover Great New Writers program; his second novel\, A Bloom of Bones\, was recognized as a Montana Book Award honor book. His recent poetry collection\, Mumblecusser\, was both a High Plains Book Award winner as well as a Montana Book Award honor book. His first children’s book\, Montana for Kids\, won a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. With William Kittredge\, he edited The Best of Montana’s Short Fiction. He has worked as a magazine editor (Big Sky Journal)\, as an acquisitions editor (Lyons Press / Globe Pequot Press)\, small press publisher (Bangtail Press)\, and as a Communications Director for Montana State University. A graduate of the University of Montana in Missoula and Livingston’s Park High\, he currently lives in Bozeman with his wife and teenage son. \nHumanities Montana serves Montana’s multicultural communities through stories and conversation. We offer experiences that nurture imagination and ideas by speaking to Montanans’ diverse history\, literature\, and philosophy.

DESCRIPTION:What: Join co-author Kirby Lambert in a discussion of the book A History of Montana in 101 Places: Sites and Stories from the Montana Historical Society. More accurately\, though\, Montana is not just one place but many—places large and small\, natural and human-made\, urban and rural\, old and not-so-old. \nMontana historian and author Kirby Lambert helped capture the stories behind some of Montana’s best-and least-known landmarks in the newly released book “A History of Montana in 101 Places: Sites and Stories from the Montana Historical Society.” \nLambert is taking the popular new book on tour this spring and summer\, stopping at destinations in every corner of the Treasure State. Lambert will visit Stillwater County Library on Saturday\, June 20th at 10:30 am. \nLambert will give a 45-minute presentation followed by time for questions and book signing. \nWhile he won’t be able to make tour stops at every place featured in the book\, Lambert—who co-authored “101 Places” with fellow historians Christine Brown\, Martha Kohl\, and the late Ellen Baumler—will visit more than a dozen communities to talk about local history and the research\, writing\, and photography found in the beautiful\, one-of-a-kind publication. \n“Behind each of these places are unique stories that\, when woven together\, tell the colorful history of this place we call home\,” Lambert said. \n“101 Places” features diverse locations that embody major cultural\, economic\, and political developments in the history of the state. Battlefields and government buildings appear alongside homes\, schools\, and taverns. Indigenous cultural sites share space with farms and mines as these places come together to tell Montana’s story. \nThe book features stunning photography by Tom Ferris\, who worked as the archival photographer at the Montana Historical Society from 1995 to 2024. Ferris’ photographs have appeared in numerous magazines and books\, and his work is in many private collections in the United States and overseas. \nNow retired\, Lambert worked for more than 36 years at the Montana Historical Society where he served in a variety of capacities—as museum registrar\, curator of collections\, curator of art\, and director of outreach and education. \nAmong numerous other duties\, he curated nearly three dozen exhibits on a wide variety of topics relating to Montana art and history and\, for a number of years\, organized the Society’s annual Montana History Conference. \nLambert has co-authored several publications\, including Montana’s Charlie Russell: Art in the Collection of the Montana Historical Society. He is also a regular contributor to Montana The Magazine of Western History. Kirby received the Museums Association of Montana’s Peter Yegen\, Jr.\, Award in 2014 and the Governor’s Humanities Award in 2015.
