Celebrate Children’s Book Week, May 5-11!
Children’s Book Week is a national week-long event that celebrates books for young readers. 2025 is the 106th anniversary of this beloved program, and this year’s event slogan is An Ocean of Stories. This year is about celebrating the vast, collective ocean populated by the stories we read, share, and tell.
This week, twenty-four of your favorite book characters are hidden in a Giant Word Search at the library, with only one find per-person, we will need everyone’s help to find them all! Also, don’t miss a fishy Storytime May 7th at 10:30 am.
This Year’s poster was created by artist Julie Flett. Here is her artist statement for the 2025 Poster:
It was such an honour to be asked to participate in this year’s Children’s Book Week celebration. Every Child a Reader gave me a few slogans to choose from and I loved them all. It made it hard to choose. I could feel the love of the people who work with the CBC and ECAR, the care they put into the work and celebration of story for kids. In the end, An Ocean of Stories stood out to me. Water stories have been on my mind and it just felt right for this one.
I had so many thoughts on our connections to water. I thought about Autumn Peltier’s work, and all of the people who are working to care for the water at this time.
I also thought about all of the stories we have as children and our relationship to the water. I remember when we’d drive out to my grandma’s place in the summer, I’d jump out of the car and run straight to the river behind their place to start looking for frogs and turtles. I’d spend hours out there sitting on a rock, dipping my hand into the water or peering into the deepest parts to day dream. And then thinking about the summer we spent in Nova Scotia by the ocean and all of the sea creatures we got to know there.
The image of a child on an adventure in a little boat meeting a friendly sea turtle, seal and seagull while all of the stories of the sea are happening underneath seemed like a good start, and a fun way to introduce this year’s Children’s Book Week celebration.
It’s just been a great project all around. It was so lovely to collaborate with Greystone Kids on the project as well. Everyone who worked on it brought it together for this celebration of children’s books and reading!
I hope everyone has fun choosing stories to read together, whether they’re stories about the sea, new and old, fiction or nonfiction, whether you read inside, at the library or home, or outside, by the water, enjoy the week together!
