Paige Turner Review: The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal

by Kayli Howard – Circulation and Organizational Support

“I don’t think a lot of people work their way up from nothing, ever. People like you want to believe it happens all the time. But it really doesn’t.”

The Lager Queen of Minnesota is about two sisters whose lives diverge after a split inheritance. Helen, the younger sister, convinces their father to leave the family farm to only her so she could use the inheritance to start a successful brewery. Edith, the older sister, never confronts Helen about the unfairness and struggles throughout life to make ends meet. J. Ryan Stradal did a fantastic job making me love the main characters, and side characters, even with their flaws!  I loved the small cross references he put between the timelines and how he connected the two sisters without them being in contact.

Our book club met to review this book and gave it a 3.3 star rating out of five. Most would refer this to a friend, and I definitely would if you are looking for a book with strong female characters who do what they must to survive and a wholesome ending!
