On these chilly nights it’s nice to stoke the fire or cuddle up into a warm blanket. We all like to pile up together on our leather couch with a cup of chamomile tea and the soft glow of a lamp or candle. Our beloved books are stashed on the end table like artwork on a fridge. It makes our home a home. Here are some of our cozy autumn favorites we like to read this time of year.
Dark on Light by Dianne White, illustrated by Felicita Sala
Three children explore the evening shadows with magnetic prose. The vivid details of light and dark jump off the page. Felicita Sala’s artwork beautifully depicts dusk, and nightfall paired with Dianne White’s poetic stanzas. It’s a favorite read as the days become shorter. This story reminds us that, “Even when it’s dark outside there is still so much light…”
Lawrence in the Fall by Matthew Farina, illustrated by Doug Salati
The class needs to bring something they collect for show and tell, but a young fox named Lawrence doesn’t have one. Papa takes Lawrence into the forest to find something to collect. This gentle story takes us on a journey through the woods in fall, and the wonder of change and joy of impermanence.
Wonder Walkers by Micha Archer
Two children explore nature in a captivating collage of color and awe. For all the children who wonder and ask why, Wonder Walkers encourages exploration with our minds and hearts. As our schedules fill up, it is a great reminder to slow down this time of year. There is magic in the natural processes around us if we just take the time to notice.
Little Witch Hazel: A Year in the Forest by Phoebe Wahl
Little Witch Hazel is a tiny witch who lives in a big forest. In this four-story volume of her adventures, Hazel rescues creatures big and small, teaches us the importance of community, and how one good turn deserves another. Each story is based on the four seasons. This book is a non-spooky pick, perfect for more sensitive listeners.
Hurry and the Monarch by Antoine O Flatharta, illustrated by Meilo So
This story follows a monarch butterfly born in early autumn, who makes the extraordinary journey from Cananda all the way to Mexico, and their journey home. The flight isn’t without peril or adventure, but she makes it back to lay her eggs and start the cycle all over again. This is a wonderful story to teach about monarch life cycle, and the charm of fall’s creatures.
Home in the Woods by Eliza Wheeler
After Marvel’s father dies, her family of nine must find a new house in a tar-paper shack. At first it isn’t much, but the family fills it with laughter, color and love. The story takes us through the seasons as their shack becomes a home. Home in the Woods teaches us that abundance of things doesn’t bring happiness, but a little grit, creativity, and gratitude can. As we are forced indoors, this reminds us how we truly can turn a house into a home.
